Keto Cholesterol Myth: How a keto diet influence your cholesterol levels

Published: June 30, 2022

What does the study say and how a keto diet may influence cholesterol? Let’s find out Keto Cholesterol Myth!

The relationship between keto diet and cholesterol has been a topic of debate and discussion. Some people have expressed concerns that a high-fat diet, which is characteristic of the keto diet, may lead to elevated cholesterol levels and potentially increase the risk of heart disease. But the effect of a keto diet on cholesterol levels can vary from person to person. Some individuals may experience an improvement in their cholesterol profile, while others may see changes that raise concerns. However, it is essential to clarify certain aspects of the keto cholesterol myth.

Increase in HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol: One of the potential benefits of a keto diet is an increase in HDL cholesterol, often referred to as “good” cholesterol. This can be a positive effect as higher levels of HDL cholesterol are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease.

Change in LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol: The impact on LDL cholesterol is more complex. Some people may experience a decrease in LDL cholesterol levels, particularly the small, dense LDL particles that are considered more harmful. However, some individuals may see an increase in LDL cholesterol, particularly the large, fluffy particles. The type of LDL particle matters, and not all LDL cholesterol is equally problematic.

Total Cholesterol: On a keto diet, the total cholesterol level may rise for some individuals due to the increase in HDL and/or LDL cholesterol. However, this total number may not be a reliable indicator of heart disease risk, but you should track your values periodically.

Keto Cholesterol Myth: Debunking the Myths with Science

Study suggested the difference results on short-term and long-term effects of keto diet. Several studies have suggested that the keto diet can affect cholesterol levels.

A study divided participants into a keto diet group and a low fat diet group.

Throughout the study, those who had followed the keto diet for 2 months lost more weight, had significant rise in LDL cholesterol levels. One study in which participants who had followed the keto diet for 6 months experienced an average reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, and had higher HDL cholesterol levels. Another study also showed a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol levels after 6 months. A further research further monitored people who had followed either the keto diet or a low fat diet for almost 1 year and note that those who following the keto diet had lower triglyceride levels and higher HDL cholesterol levels. Overall, some suggest that the keto diet affect cholesterol, lower levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol but raise levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol; however, the other report the opposite result. Therefore, the keto cholesterol myth oversimplifies a complex relationship. The effects of the keto diet on cholesterol are multifaceted, and the impact varies among individuals. You should know that the keto diet may not be appropriate for everyone. (1)
