“Becuase we’re seeing really good cardiovascular results from a keto diet. So having high cholesterol doesn’t automatically deprive you from keto diet.” says Susan Ryskamp, RDN, a clinical dietitian at Michigan Medicine’s Frankel Cardiovascular Center in Ann Arbor. (1)

But it’s very important to ask a healthcare professional whether the diet is suitable for you if you have high cholesterol levels and are interested in trying the keto diet. Because If you have preexisting high cholesterol levels and the healthcare professional can adjust the structure of your keto diet based on your particular cholesterol levels and overall health. (2)

An internist and lipidologist at Penn Medicine in Philadelphia, Daniel Soffer, MD said research shows keto produces modest reductions in triglycerides, modest changes in heart-protective high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and minimal changes in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. Some studies, show an increase in LDL on low- or very low-carb diets. (Long-term studies, however, are lacking.)
